How to Tell a Better Story - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Arrowsight CEO Adam Aronson is a handsome, intelligent, athletic, self-motivated and ingenious entrepreneur profiled last Sunday in the New York Times. He wrote a short autobiographical sketch of his life and career for “The Boss” column. I read this column every Sunday, because it’s an opportunity to “meet” successful CEOs from smaller or privately held companies whom I wouldn’t generally hear about. Adam Aronson is typical of the people who tell their stories to the Times.   The linchpin of his story is that he co-founded two money management firms that trade currency â€" and after being wildly successful but concerned about how the financial industry was changing, he walked away to a business he invented. He launched a new company supplying cameras, sensors and remote video software to business, inspired by a TV expose’ on a day care center he had viewed. A child care worker had been abusing drugs. This led to the Aronson’s light bulb moment. If there had been cameras installed, he thought, there would be more scrutiny and safety. He’s gone on to expand the concept to healthcare environments, and even slaughterhouses, where he is working with an expert in humane treatment of animals. This is really heroic as well as profitable, and it’s a lesson on paying attention to popular media, because that’s where highly profitable ideas can be found. Aronson’s personal brand seems to be heroic, as well as intelligent and determined. After all, he got funding for his start-up, even though he knew nothing about the business prior to watching the program. He has grown his business despite obstacles in selling technology where the buyers have no budget allocated for it. He clearly has the ability to learn and master new industries quickly. But all of that impressive, valuable information about him nearly didn’t make it to me. All the admiration I feel for him, I almost never felt. Even his great advice about how to find investors and the right colleagues was nearly lost. Why? Because he told such a sad sack story to introduce himself. He started out with: “My parents divorced when I was five.” He then goes on to some other biographical facts about moving to a rural area with his mother and a stepfather, and working a job juicing oranges in the basement of a grocery store. Then he goes on about sixth grade when he moves in with his father. This uncomfortable and confusing saga takes the first full quarter of space allotted to the column. Do you do this? Do you start your story way too early? Way too depressing? Way too disconnected to what people should know about your personal brand? You capture or lose our attention in the first 7 seconds of our meeting you. Make your story compelling and memorable, and get us wanting more. In his book Happiness From the Inside Out, the author Robert Mack has a nugget. He says: tell a better story. When you get the chance to be featured or interviewed: use your time really wisely. 5 summer jobs you need to do! Summer is here. Some of you will be heads down in really demanding internships, leaving you little time to breathe, others will be enjoying some down time. Great, but don’t let the summer pass without doing a bit of thinking and planning to support your career development. Here are my top  5 tips on the jobs you could be tackling. 1. Reflect on all you have achieved over the last academic year. It can be difficult in the melee of university life, when you are balancing your academic studies with on-campus activity and paid work, to recognise all the skills you have acquired over the year. Now is the time to record what you did and reflect on it. Take the opportunity to do this before you forget about all the great things youve done. Try to find evidence of the development of skills from all areas of your life. You might, for example, want to include aspects of teamwork from collaborative work you did as part of modules, from participation in music or drama or sport and from jobs and work experience youve undertaken. The more areas of life you draw from, the richer your “story”. If youre a Warwick student make use of  myportfolio for that reflection and find out more about it here. Other universities will have their own software programmes to support your reflection. 2. Polish up your on-line profile. Make sure that your privacy settings on Facebook and Instagram are set so that any embarrassing photos can’t be seen by prospective employers! Think about LinkedIn.  Are you yet to get going on it? Do you already have a profile? Is it as good as you can make it? Are you making the best of it in terms of  building your network of  contacts? It is worth having a good LinkedIn account. Warwick students can access some great training on how to make the best of it here. Why not use some time over the summer to build up your contacts? Don’t just press the “Connect” button. When you identify someone youd like to link with, go to the bother of sending a connect invitation explaining who you are and why you want to connect. The etiquette here is different from that on Facebook. You want to make sure that you run your account in a professional way and that you impress your connections by being thoroughly businesslike. Making an approach in the right way is important. 3. Keep up to date with the news. Whatever job interests you, it’s likely that prospective employers are going to want to see that you know whats going on in the world. If you have no real idea whats happening, its difficult to come across as the well informed, global citizen which most graduate employers today are looking for. You can access a lot of good news sources for free, try BBC News or Channel 4 News, as starting points. For comment you could try picking up Newsnight and The Today Programme. You might also want to read newspapers and, if you are aiming for a City post, The Economist is always a good choice. There are other websites providing information specific to particular professions or occupations. Engineers might want to look at The Engineer  or Tech Tent, lawyers might be more interested in Lexology. Find out what works for you. 4. Research opportunities in your area. If you’ve graduated and your job is lined up don’t rest on your laurels! Youll want to go in and impress your new employers from Day 1. Now is the time to plan for that! Make sure that you keep abreast of what your future employer is doing, follow it on its website and social media. If you haven’t got that job yet then use this time to do some research on what is “out there” and spend some time thinking what would interest you. Keep detailed notes of what you find out and try to narrow down your options. Make sure that you get some downtime too and that you come back to university refreshed and ready to make the most of every opportunity offered to you!
